Old properties: setting the right scene in the dining room

The dining room is more than just a place to eat. Especially if it is adjoined by an open-plan cooking and living area, which is usually the case in older apartments. The dining room then quickly becomes the communication hub of your own four walls, which is often appropriately called the “dining area”. Reason enough to make a statement with the furnishings and create a place where people enjoy coming together. We’ll show you how to set the scene for your dining room.

The table – which material is right for me?

Depending on the material, you can give your dining room a completely different effect. While glass tends to look cool and very light due to its transparency, wood is an easy-care all-rounder that radiates warmth through its appearance. If the wood ages well and beautifully, the furniture will quickly become a lifelong companion. Due to its individual grain, color and density, a dining table made of natural stone is also a unique piece that immediately creates a striking and unmistakable look in the room. Read our interview with color expert Anna von Mangoldt to find out how you can give entire rooms a completely new look with the right color combination.

If you have the space for it, the table should be placed in the middle of the room so that it really catches the eye. When it comes to finding the right shape and size, both should match the floor plan. A round table, for example, has the advantage of offering several people an ideal place for stimulating conversations, whereas two people at a large round table often seem a little lost.

Chairs – design is not everything

The choice of chairs is crucial to ensure that long periods of sitting at the dining table are not a torture and rewarded with back pain. After all, who doesn’t want guests to stay? A key factor for comfort is the height of the chairs. This should be in the right proportion to the table. To find out whether you really want to “own” the chair in question, you are often given the opportunity to take the model home with you to try it out. Instead of a uniform seating group, you can also choose completely different chairs that bring their own style and character to the dining table, in line with the mix-and-match trend. If you decide to do this, it is advisable to choose a table with a simple design so that the chair mix can unfold its full effect.

Choosing the right lighting

When it comes to choosing the right light source, it should be one thing above all: expressive. A striking light prevents the dining table from looking lost in the room and rounds off the furnishings stylistically. As a visual anchor point, the light defines the dining area in the room. Ideally, the light should be bright but not unpleasant to the eye. With other smaller light sources, for example in the form of dimmable ceiling spotlights or candles, a cozy atmosphere is quickly created in charming old rooms.
