How to save money when renovating your property

Dilapidated pipes, leaky windows or the barrier-free conversion of your own four walls: the renovation of existing properties can have various reasons and can sometimes be very costly. This makes it all the more important to find out about the various subsidy options in good time. Low-interest subsidized loans, repayment grants or advice – financial and professional support can make renovating your property much easier and take a considerable load off your wallet.

Funding for energy-efficient conversions

Nobody likes to see high electricity and heating costs on their bill. That’s why it’s important to replace inefficient radiators and poorly insulated walls and windows and rectify the causes. Before you call a tradesman, it makes sense to consult an energy consultant. This advice is 60 percent funded by the state and is an important step towards energy-efficient living. Before actually renovating your home, you should ensure that you apply for a subsidy program in good time, as this must be done before the building work begins. It is best to have an architect or engineer supervise the renovation and coordinate the projects. The state will also cover up to 50 percent of the costs for this. In addition, the support of a professional provides a certain degree of security. If you are starting the renovation and own a property that is over 19 years old, you are particularly lucky: you can receive a three- to four-figure grant for the energy-efficient renovation of your home. This is because, contrary to what is often claimed, old buildings can also be renovated and subsidized for energy efficiency.

Increased living comfort thanks to modernization

Individual measures to reduce barriers are not tied to any age. Whether it’s a floor-level shower in the bathroom, deepening door frames or installing a stair lift – modernization measures for increased living comfort can also be carried out with the help of a state financial injection. Up to 20 percent of the costs can be saved if the application is submitted in good time. Modernization measures also include increasing the security standard. So if you want to make your property more burglar-proof, you can also apply for a grant. This includes, for example, alarm systems, grilles and roller shutters or the reinforcement of door frames. All applications can be found online on the KfW grant portal. There are therefore many opportunities to receive financial subsidies from the state when renovating or upgrading a property. It therefore makes sense to find out about them at the planning stage. This can save you some costs and you can get good advice from professional construction supervision or energy consultants.
